Word Wednesday #53

"So two or three cities wandered unto one city, to drink water; but they were not satisfied: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the Lord." Amos 4:8

Wandering from one place to another, gather from others what we do not have will never bring satisfaction. Only when we return to God will we truly be satisfied.

Thanks for sharing, Amanda! The thought here reminded me of the hymn "Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus". When our eyes and expectations are fixed on God, then our expectations of others becomes much more gracious and realistic. :)

This week, I've been reading in Nehemiah and the Lord has both encouraged and challenged me with this beautiful book. One of them has been the theme of the last half of the book where the returned Jews hear, react and obey the words of the law after Ezra read it publicly. There is so much one could share, but I'll just include some of the verses that have caught my attention.

"And Ezra the priest brought the law before the congregation both of men and women, and all that could hear with understanding, upon...And he read therein before the street that was before the water gate from the morning until midday, before the men and the women, and those that could understand; and the ears of all the people were attentive unto the book of the law...So they read in the book in the law of God distinctly, and gave the sense, and caused them to understand the reading." (Neh. 8:2-3 & 8)

"And the seed of Israel separated themselves from all strangers, and stood and confessed their sins, and the iniquities of their fathers. And they stood up in their place, and read in the book of the law of the Lord their God one fourth part of the day; and another fourth part they confessed, and worshipped the Lord their God." (9:2-3)

"And the rest of the people, the priests, the Levites, the porters, the singers, the Nethinims, and all they that had separated themselves from the people of the lands unto the law of God, their wives, their sons, and their daughters, every one having knowledge, and having understanding; They clave to their brethren, their nobles, and entered into a curse, and into an oath, to walk in God's law, which was given by Moses the servant of God, and to observe and do all the commandments of the Lord our Lord, and his judgments and his statutes;" (10:28-29)

God's people returned to Him with hearts of repentance and obedience, but only after they had received understanding from hearing God's word. Hearing the word lead to fearing God, confessing sin, and repenting of disobedience.

Acts 23: 4,5
" And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God's high priest?
Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the high priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people."

This is a verse that is important to ponder (especially for me). We must be so careful how we speak of those that are in authority over us, whether they are believers, or doing the right thing, or whatever, because God has placed them in positions of authority over us.

@ Kenzi,

Amen!

I love reading through Nehemiah! Daddy has preached through it at least once and referred back to it multiple times. :) There's so much to learn from it!
